Hello faith family! This is the Sunday of the Resurrection, Easter Sunday – March 31, 2024, Year B. Alleluia! Alleluia!!

There are 3 worship opportunities this Easter morning:

  • 6 a.m. – sunrise service in the Grove, in-person only (6:00 a.m. booklet)
    • outside in the Grove around a fire pit
    • With the power of chanting and the simplicity of basic instruments, we can create something truly beautiful
    • connecting with the followers of Jesus on the first Easter
  • 8 a.m. – Holy Eucharist, Rite I, in-person and online at YouTube (8:00 a.m. booklet)
    • traditional wording
    • some organ accompanied music
    • fellowship in the Overflowing Cafe following the service
  • 10:30 a.m. – Holy Eucharist, Rite II, in-person and online at YouTube (10:30 a.m. booklet)
    • modern wording
    • more music
    • join in the Hallelujah Chorus (Messiah)
    • Easter egg hunt following the service

Worship and weekly news for March 24, 2024

Hello faith family! This is the Sunday of the Passion, Palm Sunday – March 24, 2024, Year B. Palm Sunday commemorates Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in each of the four canonical Gospels. According to the Gospels, Jesus Christ rode on a donkey into Jerusalem, and the celebrating people there laid down their cloaks and small branches of trees in front of him, singing part of Psalm 118: 25–26 – Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. We bless you from the house of the Lord.

The symbolism of the donkey may refer to the Eastern tradition that it is an animal of peace, unlike the horse which is the animal of war. A king would have ridden a horse when he was bent on war and ridden a donkey to symbolize his arrival in peace. Christ’s entry to Jerusalem would have thus symbolized his entry as the Prince of Peace, not as a war-waging king.

Maundy Thursday 2024 Soup Dinner and Worship

Let’s come together on Thursday, March 28, 2024, for a delicious soup dinner at 6:00 p.m. followed by the traditional Maundy Thursday evening worship service at 7:00 p.m., with foot washing, stripping of the altar, and begin the watch that will run continuously from 7 p.m.-9 a.m. the following morning, in-person and live on YouTube.

ALL are Welcome to come for dinner, for worship, or for both. Please feel free to share this invitation.

If you would like to contribute to the dinner (bread, set-up, clean-up), please sign up.

Blood Drive on March 23, 2024

Blood Drive March 2024

FREE DESSERTS! Please stop by the St. Thomas’s blood drive this Saturday, March 23, 2024, anytime between 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., and enjoy some homemade baked goods. Indulge in a treat knowing you’ve saved a life. If you are not able to donate this Saturday, please support this event by telling your friends and neighbors. Walk-ins are welcome, but you can reserve an appointment. As of today, only half of the slots have been filled, so a convenient time should be available for you. Thank you for your support!

Hope Dining Room volunteers needed Monday, March 18, 2024

Dear Families of St. Thomas’s and St. Nicholas,

Next Monday, March 18, 2024, is our opportunity to serve at Hope Dining Room. Hope Dining Room where we serve “a midday hot meal with dignity, to those in need in the Greater Newark Delaware area.”

Guests at Hope are “dining in”, so we have 2 different short shifts for which you can volunteer. The setup and cooking shift goes from 10 – 11:45 a.m. The serving and cleanup shift goes from 11:45 – 1:30 p.m.

If you’d like to help, please bring a ball cap and an apron. We would LOVE to see you! All of this takes place at Kingswood Methodist Church kitchen on Marrows Road in Brookside Park. It is a team effort, lots of fun and it makes you feel so good to feed people who really appreciate it.

Please volunteer for the things we need for the meal and to volunteer.

If you are donating one of those items, THANK YOU! You can bring it to St. Thomas’s, Monday – Thursday from 9 – noon, OR when you come to church on Sunday! Please put it in the kitchen and mark it for “HOPE DINING ROOM”.  If that doesn’t fit into your schedule, give me a call, text or email and I will pick it up at your house.

Hello faith family! This is the Third Sunday in Lent – March 3, 2024, Year B. This week, we celebrate Charles Wesley, an English leader of the Methodist movement. Wesley was a prolific hymnwriter who wrote over 6,500 hymns during his lifetime. His works include “And Can It Be“, “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today”, “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”, the carol “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”, and “Lo! He Comes With Clouds Descending”. He is also pictured in our St Thomas’s stained glass windows. Can you find him this Sunday?

Children’s Ministries Good Friday 2024 event

St. Thomas’s Children’s Ministries are offering a Holy Week inspired event for children ages 4-11 and their families on Good Friday, March 29, 2024. This Good Friday Gathering for Children and Families will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will include a snack.

I hope that many of our families with children will include this event in their Holy Week calendar. It will be a great way to allow your children to fellowship with friends and to experience Holy Week with developmentally appropriate activities.

Please feel free to share this information with friends who do not attend St. Thomas’s and with other churches with whom you may be affiliated. We love visitors!!  Anyone can RSVP online or by contacting me via email or phone.

ALSO, If you are a teen or adult who is willing to help with activities, that would be great. Please let me know that too.

Poets’ Corner Reading Series February 2024

Poets’ Corner Reading Series presents Marceline White on Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 4:30 p.m. at St. Thomas’s Episcopal Church, 276 S College Avenue, Newark, Delaware. This event is co-sponsored by St. Thomas’s Parish and the University of Delaware Department of English.

A two-time Pushcart Prize and recent Best of the Net nominee, Marceline’s writing has appeared or is forthcoming in trampset, Culinary Origami, The Heartland Review, Prime Number, The Orchard Review, The Indianapolis Review, Atticus Review, Little Patuxent Review, Gingerbread House, The Free State Review, and The Loch Raven Review and others. She was a recipient of an Aspen Words Fellowship in 2023. When not writing, Marceline can be found serving her two cats, posting too many pictures of her garden, and telling her son to text her when he arrives at the party.
