Black History Month 2024

posted in: News | 0

Each day this month, we will hear from African-American theologians (and one African!),past and contemporary.

Which of these voices do you hear speaking about your own experience?
Which are calling you to a new vision of God’s plan for humanity?
And who should we hear more from?

God’s peace to you today and always.

Adult Education Series – The Rule of Saint Benedict

posted in: Adult Education | 0

The Rule of Saint Benedict series will be held on January 14, 21, 28th, and February 4, 2024 from 9-10 a.m.

In the 6th Century, Benedict of Nursia founded a religious community and wrote for it set of guidelines on how Christians (monks in his case) ought to live a godly and peaceable life together, “The Rule of St Benedict.”

It strikes a balance between the needs and goals of the individual and the community, and is known especially for its emphasis on moderation in all things. In 15 centuries since it was written, it has influenced the lives of countless Christians, those living in religious communities and those living in the secular world.

Join us as we read “Rule”, as it was at its birth and as it is lived today. For source material, we will draw on the Rule as originally written and on “St Benedict’s Toolbox: The Nuts and Bolts of Everyday Benedictine Living,” by Jane Tomaine (an Episcopal priest).Whenever possible, we will offer all our programs in person and virtually. Please make plans to attend in whatever format best fits your circumstances.

Please email the office if you need a zoom link: StThomassOffice@googlegroups.com

Annual Parish Meeting 2024

posted in: News | 0

St.. Thomas’s Annual Parish Meeting will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2024 after the 10:30 a.m. service. Before the Annual Meeting, we will hold two working preparation sessions on January 21 and February 25, 2024 from 9-10 a.m.

We invite everyone to come with good ideas and with passion for the mission of God at St. Thomas’s to one or both of the prep meetings. And, we hope to see all of our faith family at the Annual Meeting.

Help us to answer:
What should we dream of for the parish going forward?
What is God calling us to do and be now and in the years to come?

You can help shape our future. Help make decisions about how we share the way of love throughout our faith family, our church, and our community. Share your unique perspective.

And, it is also the season to elect new vestry members. Please speak to any member of the vestry, Fr. Howie or Fr. Clay about what being on the vestry means and how to nominate yourself or someone else. Nominations can begin this Sunday and elections will be held at our annual meeting.

Hope Dining Room volunteers needed Monday, January 15, 2024

Dear Families of St. Thomas’s and St. Nicholas,

Next Monday, January 15, 2024, is our opportunity to serve at Hope Dining Room. Hope Dining Room where we serve “a midday hot meal with dignity, to those in need in the Greater Newark Delaware area.”

This month, our day to serve, falls on Martin Luther King Day and our teens have no school. SO, they have decided to do some community service and will be our cooks and servers at Hope this month! When you see them at church, be sure to thank them for volunteering!

Please volunteer for the things we need for the meal and to volunteers. We had 20 fruit cups left from last month, so we only need 20 more. We plan to serve 40 people.

If you are donating one of those items, THANK YOU! You can bring it to St. Thomas’s, Monday – Thursday from 9 – noon, OR when you come to church on Sunday! Please put it in the kitchen and mark it for “HOPE DINING ROOM”.  If that doesn’t fit into your schedule, give me a call, text or email and I will pick it up at your house.

MANY Blessings to you ALL,
Madeline Johnson

Hello faith family! This is the First Sunday after Christmas Day – December 31, 2023, Year B. This week, we remember the Massacre of the Innocents. The Gospel of Matthew tells how the Magi visit Jerusalem to seek guidance as to where the king of the Jews has been born; King Herod directs them to Bethlehem and asks them to return to him and report, but they are warned in a dream that Herod wishes to find the child and kill him, and do not do so. Matthew continues: When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi. — Matthew 2:16
