Greetings all. A few updates follow.

1) CREW will not be meeting tomorrow, Oct. 24, 2021, as originally scheduled. Our next meeting will be on Nov. 7, 2021.

2) Ms. Madeline looks forward to seeing everyone from ages 4 to 7th grade tomorrow, Oct. 24,  2021, at 10:15 a.m. for Sunday School. Hope for good weather so we can meet under our big red tent!

3)Trunk or Treat is cancelled for next week due to a scheduling conflict.  But we would still like to help UNICEF. Please keep a look out for an alternate plan.

4) We are still in need of leaders for Sunday School and hosts for CREW youth group activities.

Please let me know if you are interested in either. Thanks!

CREW Youth Group Gathering- September 19, 2021

posted in: CREW | 0

I am so happy that fall is upon us and we can gather safely and comfortably outside again.

All youth in grades 6 and up (as well as any adults interested in serving in youth ministry) are invited to a gathering in the St. Thomas’s courtyard on Sunday, September 19, 2021 from 11:45 to 1:00 p.m. for a light lunch, cake and ice cream while we mutually plan our program year. The “grown ups” have some ideas but we want to hear ideas from our youth.

As usual, we will follow CDC and diocesan guidelines for gathering which include social distancing and wearing a mask indoors. (Feel free to wear your mask outdoors if you want to, especially if you are not vaccinated.)

  • Please email or call me to let me know you are coming so I can be sure we have enough food and cake. But, if you decide to come at the last minute, please do. The more, the merrier!!
  • Also Let me know if you have a September birthday so we can celebrate you.
  • If you are unable to come, but want to give input on our plans for the year, email me with your ideas.
  • If I forgot someone on this email, please forward it.
  • Feel free to bring friends.

I look forward to seeing great things happen this year!

Children’s Ministries start-up for Fall 2021

Just a reminder that Sunday School for children aged 4 years to grade 6(7) begins tomorrow, September 12, 2021, in the red tents in the courtyard. We will begin Registration and Gathering at 10:15 a.m. and the Lesson will begin at approximately 10:35 a.m.

Youth Confirmation registration and information session will begin tomorrow too. Confirmation is being offered for youth in 8th grade. Please contact Bob Rys with questions.

Youth group activities will begin on September 19,, 2021, with a “cake and ice cream party” and planning meeting. Look for more details tomorrow evening.

During all children’s and youth ministries activities this year, we will be following COVID guidelines recommended by the diocese, the CDC, Christina School District, and St. Thomas’s preautions. We will choose the strictest guidelines. This means that masking is expected by everyone age 2 and older.

I look forward to seeing everyone again. Please feel free to contact me either with questions or if you need at-home activities.

Blessings, Belinda

CREW Environmental Service Project for May 2021

Recently, St. Thomas’s youth group known as CREW, which stands for “Christians Ready, Equipped, and Willing,” spent a day at the Judge Morris Estate, part of White Clay Creek State Park, clearing out garlic mustard.

Garlic mustard impacts the growth of our native forest, trees, shrubs, and other plants. It is an invasive plant, native to large parts of Europe, Asia, and northern Africa. It was brought to North America as a source of food, medicine, and erosion control. However, it has spread widely into natural areas in the northeastern United States since the 1860’s and has been nicknamed the “thug of the woods.”

Children and Youth May 2021 update

Our parish family at St. Thomas’s includes a number of families with children. The inclusion of these children in worship and parish life is of great importance in the life of our Parish. We take seriously the Baptismal vow “to do all in our power to support these persons in their life with Christ.”

Each year, we continue to strive to give our children new and exciting ways to discover more about God and who God is calling to them to be. Our children are encouraged to share God’s love by serving each other, their families and their community. During “normal” times, the children are invited to serve as ushers, readers and acolytes in St. Thomas’s regular Sunday services. Many of them sing in the Lights choir and a few occasionally join the adult choir. In addition, the children help in various ways with fundraising and fellowship events such as the annual Annual Bazaar. They help their global community by participating in Trick or Treat for UNICEF. And at the end of each year, the children share the Christmas story in a pageant service for the congregation.

During the past year, the Youth and Children of St. Thomas’s have not been as visible. However, that does not reflect their participation. The younger children have joined together with Christ Church Greenville, in remote Sunday School. Each week, they receive a packet in the mail with the lesson, the discussion, and a craft. Additionally, a weekly email gives parents tips and insights, and a link to the corresponding video. Our older Youth known as “Christians Ready, Equipped, and Willing” or “CREW,” have also been meeting virtually. Sue and Mike Houghton have been absolutely inspirational with the way that they have carried this program. CREW meets bi-weekly via Zoom and also participates in monthly activities. They have invited guests from the parish to participate in their Zoom meetings, enjoyed some fellowship with the college age group known as Episcopal Campus Ministry or ECM, and have done some community service. Some of the youth have even participated in ministry meetings via zoom, such as the finance committee. We all came together in the fall for a fun trunk-or-treat and the Christmas pageant happened virtually. Our Diocese has hosted a number of online events and there are more upcoming both online and in-person.

This Sunday, May 16, 2021, we will get to see several of our children take the next steps in their religious life. Bishop Kevin will be celebrating with us at 9 a.m. on YouTube and in-person. He will be Baptizing and Confirming members of our faith family! Noah will be receiving the Holy sacrament of Baptism. Amelia, Oscar and Zach will be confirmed, after faithfully and patiently waiting for over a year. This will be a joyous occasion!

We are all looking forward to the day when we can see our youth participate and hear little voices during the services. This will be done with the utmost care for the health and safety of our community and will not happen all at once. But, be assured, that even if you are not seeing and hearing much of our young pilgrims, their spiritual journeys are continuing. A HUGE thank you to all of the adults who support them. If you are interested in participating in any way, on one occasion or for a season, you are most welcome! Please contact the office at or Fr. Howie to discuss how you can contribute.

Then little children were being brought to Him in order that He might lay his hands on them and pray. The Disciples spoke sternly to those who brought them; but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs.” Matthew 19:13-14

St. Thomas’s Children’s and Youth Ministries will hold a Service Saturday, December 12, 2020.

To minimize the number of people at St. Thomas’s at one time due to Covid-19 we will have the Children’s Ministry and Youth Ministry meet at different times. Masks must be worn at all times. Social Distancing should be practiced.

Children’s Ministry will meet at 10:00 a.m. and fill Goodie Bags for Christmas 2020 Outreach with Tarbiyah. 50 Goodie Bags will be filled with donations from St. Thomas’s. Stations will be set-up to allow proper social distancing. Parent’s help with smaller children i s appreciated.

Youth Ministry (CREW) will meet from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. and prepare cookies for Hope Dining Room. We had hoped to bake cookies together at St. Thomas’s but since Covid-19 numbers are up we are asking you to bring in some homemade cookies. Ask your parents to help where needed, or invite them to join in making some cookies. While making cookies, we hope you will think of spreading Christ’s love to our community. Please use the Cookie Sign-up to let us know what you will bring.

Christmas 2020 Outreach with Tarbiyah – Youth will help repackage supplies and other gifts for Tarbiyah.

Leaf Raking – If we have any extra time, we will help out St. Thomas’s by doing some leaf raking. Bring a jacket and some gloves.

Youth Ministry Volunteer Meeting

posted in: CREW | 0

St. Thomas’s Youth Ministries is having a meeting tomorrow, October 30, 2020 (Friday) night at 7 p.m. to go over the planned program and then to help match Volunteers up with specific opportunities. Since this is an all volunteer effort, we want to make sure we had committed support from volunteers to help run the program before rolling it out to the youth.

The Youth Ministry Program is for 6th through 12 graders. There are many opportunities to be involved with this program with varying levels of time commitment. These opportunities include meeting facilitation, mentoring, ministry liaisons, hospitality, activities, prayer, and service projects.  See the Sign-up Genius listing of volunteer opportunities to go with this program.

If you are interested in helping out please try to come to the meeting.  I apologize for the short notice.  If you are interested in helping out and cannot attend the meeting please contact me directly so that I can give you more information and help to identify the best way to involve you in our program.
