During all children’s and youth ministries activities this year, we will be following COVID guidelines recommended by the diocese, the CDC, Christina School District, and St. Thomas’s preautions. Children and Youth May 2021 update

Our parish family at St. Thomas’s includes a number of families with children. The inclusion of these children in worship and parish life is of great importance in the life of our Parish. We take seriously the Baptismal vow “to do all in our power to support these persons in their life with Christ.”

Each year, we continue to strive to give our children new and exciting ways to discover more about God and who God is calling to them to be. Our children are encouraged to share God’s love by serving each other, their families and their community. During “normal” times, the children are invited to serve as ushers, readers and acolytes in St. Thomas’s regular Sunday services. Many of them sing in the Lights choir and a few occasionally join the adult choir. In addition, the children help in various ways with fundraising and fellowship events such as the annual Annual Bazaar. They help their global community by participating in Trick or Treat for UNICEF. And at the end of each year, the children share the Christmas story in a pageant service for the congregation.

During the past year, the Youth and Children of St. Thomas’s have not been as visible. However, that does not reflect their participation. The younger children have joined together with Christ Church Greenville, in remote Sunday School. Each week, they receive a packet in the mail with the lesson, the discussion, and a craft. Additionally, a weekly email gives parents tips and insights, and a link to the corresponding video. Our older Youth known as “Christians Ready, Equipped, and Willing” or “CREW,” have also been meeting virtually. Sue and Mike Houghton have been absolutely inspirational with the way that they have carried this program. CREW meets bi-weekly via Zoom and also participates in monthly activities. They have invited guests from the parish to participate in their Zoom meetings, enjoyed some fellowship with the college age group known as Episcopal Campus Ministry or ECM, and have done some community service. Some of the youth have even participated in ministry meetings via zoom, such as the finance committee. We all came together in the fall for a fun trunk-or-treat and the Christmas pageant happened virtually. Our Diocese has hosted a number of online events and there are more upcoming both online and in-person.

This Sunday, May 16, 2021, we will get to see several of our children take the next steps in their religious life. Bishop Kevin will be celebrating with us at 9 a.m. on YouTube and in-person. He will be Baptizing and Confirming members of our faith family! Noah will be receiving the Holy sacrament of Baptism. Amelia, Oscar and Zach will be confirmed, after faithfully and patiently waiting for over a year. This will be a joyous occasion!

We are all looking forward to the day when we can see our youth participate and hear little voices during the services. This will be done with the utmost care for the health and safety of our community and will not happen all at once. But, be assured, that even if you are not seeing and hearing much of our young pilgrims, their spiritual journeys are continuing. A HUGE thank you to all of the adults who support them. If you are interested in participating in any way, on one occasion or for a season, you are most welcome! Please contact the office at StThomassOffice@googlegroups.com or Fr. Howie to discuss how you can contribute.

Then little children were being brought to Him in order that He might lay his hands on them and pray. The Disciples spoke sternly to those who brought them; but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs.” Matthew 19:13-14

Youth Confirmation for 2021

This is a call and invitation for Youth Confirmation Class, a unique session in early 2021.  If you’re at least 12 years old or 7-8th grade, you’re welcome to join this spirit-filled journey centered around worship, learning, service, witness and fellowship.  Given the COVID pandemic, the class would meet primarily on Sundays from mid-January thru June 2021 via Zoom.   It’s a few months shorter than usual for us and we require a minimum of two youth for class.  We expect no compromise in content nor to the growth experience for candidates.  There will be loads of prayerful dialogue, laughter and fun as always!

So, what do we do in confirmation class?

  • Relate God’s teachings and Christian faith to our daily living
  • Share life stories to connect with God and one another
  • Give of our time and talent to service projects within the church community
  • Discover what it means to make a personal decision for Christ and meaningful relationship with the church

So, what questions do you have or interested in confirmation?   Drop us a note, text or phone call and we’ll get right back to you!

Peace,

Teri Quinn Gray <tquinngray@verizon.net>

2020 Confirmation Class Hasn’t Missed a Beat

posted in: Confirmation | 0

Dear St. Thomas’s Parish,

We’re writing this note with much gratitude for the opportunity to work another year with Youth Confirmation.  As we wind down the 2019-20 term, we thought it would be fitting to provide a brief update on the status of this year’s class.  Since the onset of “shelter-in-place” on March 15, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve missed only one class and extended the course calendar three weeks to conclude on Pentecost Sunday, June 7, 2020.  It’s hard to believe that there have been 3.5 technology apps and four syllabus revisions over the last 10 weeks.  Our confirmands have surveyed the Old Testament, journeyed through the Gospel of Mark and currently exploring the formative questions, “Who is God for You? and Who are You for God?”   The Confirmation Class now meets via Skype at 10 – 11:30 AM on Sundays, immediately after church service LIVE on YouTube. They haven’t missed a beat over the last 9 months.

Furthermore, we quickly adapted our learning plans to the reality of the current crisis.  Recent class discussions have pivoted toward coping with “so much homework”, “missing friends and teachers”, “computer issues” and “good (and not so good) things happenings because of COVID-19”.  The class has spent considerable time on habits of faith over fear, usually capped with marvelous student-led prayers that honor essential workers or those who are adversely impacted by the pandemic.  Although Night Watch in NYC was cancelled and Confirmation Sunday postponed, the confirmands remain highly engaged during these uncertain times.

The Confirmation Class of 2020 is simply amazing and smart, and forgetful, and curious, and stubborn, and courageous, occasionally worried, and funny, and frequently tired, and caring, and opinionated, and super creative and sometimes downright passionate all in a span of 90 minutes!   They keep us on our toes, for sure.  We’re truly blessed to learn and grow with these wonderful young people.

Let’s continue to pray for our confirmands as they wind down formal confirmation classes.  Their ultimate decision for confirmation is imminent and we wish them all the best on this next step toward adulthood.  Special thanks to parents, families and the entire St. Thomas’s Parish for all of your support this past year!

#StayHome and Be Well,

Bob Rys and Teri Quinn Gray
