Hello faith family! This is the Twenty-fourth Sunday after Pentecost – November 12, 2023. This week, we celebrate Herman of Alaska. His gentle approach and ascetic life earned him the love and respect of both the native Alaskans and the Russian colonists. He is considered by many Orthodox Christians to be the patron saint of North America.

Hello faith family! This is the Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost – October 29, 2023.

This week, we will celebrate All Saints’ Day, on November 1, 2023. All Saints’ Day, also known as All Hallows’ Day, the Feast of All Saints, the Feast of All Hallows, the Solemnity of All Saints, and Hallowmas, is a Christian solemnity celebrated in honor of all the saints of the Church, whether they are known or unknown. This is not to be confused with All Souls’ Day, a day of prayer and remembrance for the faithful departed, which is on November 2, 2023 and which we will mark on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at 10 a.m. in the St. Thomas’s Cemetery. ALL are Welcome!

Vigil for Peace in the Middle East

posted in: Worship | 0

Vigil for Peace in the Middle East ALL are Welcome to come together with love for a candle-lit vigil, community prayer vigil for peace in the Middle East on Sunday, October 22, 2023, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at St. Thomas’s Episcopal Church, 276 S. College Ave. Newark Delaware 19711. Service will be in-person and online at YouTube

This special gathering will unite our community: all ages, all religious beliefs, all backgrounds.

“We offer our prayers and support during this time of violence in Israel and Palestine. In Luke 19:41, we are reminded ‘That when Jesus drew near and saw the city, he wept over it.’ Many still weep.

We pray for those who have been killed, injured, are searching for loved ones, and are struggling with grief and fear. The Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem has consistently advocated for peace and justice, teaching us all what it means to walk in the way of love, to which Jesus points.

We are praying for Israelis and Palestinians.

We give thanks for the dedicated staff at al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza, part of the Episcopal Diocese of Jerusalem, and for all who are offering medical care in the region. We pray for their strength and safety.

Please join us in praying that there is a de-escalation and that the root causes of violence and oppression may be confronted and challenged so that a new understanding of peace prevails.”

– The Rev. C.K. Robertson, PhD,

Canon to the Presiding Bishop for Ministry Beyond The Episcopal Church

Hello faith family! This is the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost – October 15, 2023. This week, we celebrate Luke the Evangelist: The New Testament mentions Luke briefly a few times, and the Epistle to the Colossians refers to him as a physician (from Greek for ‘one who heals’); thus he is thought to have been both a physician and a disciple of Paul. Luke is one of the Four Evangelists—the four traditionally ascribed authors of the canonical gospels. The Early Church Fathers ascribed to him authorship of both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles.

Hello faith family! This is the Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost – October 8, 2023. This week, we celebrate Edith Cavell: “Patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone.” Her strong Anglican beliefs propelled her to help all those who needed it, including both German and Allied soldiers. She is celebrated for treating wounded soldiers from both sides without discrimination and for covertly helping some 200 Allied soldiers escape from German-occupied Belgium and return to active service during the First World War, which in wartime was a death penalty offense.

Blessing of the Animals 2023As you may have heard or are eagerly waiting to hear, St. Thomas’s will be hosting its Annual Blessing of the Animals on October 8, 2023 from 2-4 p.m. In addition to the usual blessings of animals, this year’s event will include vendors, displays, giveaways, and some visits from some of our larger animal friends.

We invite you to join in the fun of the event but also to help with set up and clean up. If you have an idea for an animal related activity or table, you are invited to share that as well. However, if you are volunteering to offer an activity, please sign up for that by Oct. 1, 2023.  Please volunteer to help with the event in any of the three ways listed.

We appreciate any volunteers who can help.

Sincerely,

Belinda Young-Payne on behalf of the St. Thomas Events Committee

Hello faith family! This is the Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost – September 24, 2023. This week, I wish you a happy Michaelmas! also known as the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, the Feast of the Archangels, or the Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels, is a Christian festival observed in many Western Christian liturgical calendars on 29 September. To celebrate, you could bake a special bread or cake, called Sruthan Mhìcheil. The bread is made from equal parts of barley, oats, and rye without using any metal implements. In remembrance of absent friends or those who had died, special Struans, blessed at an early morning Mass, were given to the poor in their names.
