Dear Families of St. Thomas’s and St. Nicholas,

Monday, April 17, 2023, is our opportunity to serve at Hope Dining Room. Guests at Hope are now “dining in” instead of grabbing a lunch and leaving, so we have 2 different short shifts from which to choose. The cooking shift  (10 – 11:45 a.m.) and the serving and cleanup shift  (11:45 – 1:30 p.m.).

If you’d like to help, please bring an apron and a ball cap. We would LOVE to see you! All of this takes place at the Kingswood Methodist Church kitchen on Marrows Road in Brookside Park. It is a team effort, lots of fun and it makes you feel so good to feed people who REALLY appreciate it.

Please sign up to donate things we need for the meal. If you are donating one of those items, you can bring it to St. Thomas, Tuesday – Thursday between  9 and noon, OR when you come to church on Sunday. If that doesn’t work for you, shoot me an email and I will pick it up at your house.

MANY Blessings to you ALL,

Madeline Johnson     mad1240@comcast.net

Community Fall Clean Up Event with Lori’s Hands

posted in: Service | 0

Fall Clean UpMy name is Troy Spiezia, an intern of Lori’s Hands in Newark, Delaware. Lori’s Hands, is a local nonprofit that connects community members living with chronic illness in supportive service learning partnerships with college students. Lori’s Hands was founded in Newark and, for more than 13 years, has been providing day to day assistance and companionship to help local residents maintain their independence.

Every spring and fall, we host a yard and garden clean up day to assist Newark residents with outdoor projects to get ready for or clean up after winter.

This event is open to both members of the broader community and current Lori’s Hands student volunteers.

This year’s Fall Clean Up Event will be on Saturday, October 29, 2022 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the City of Newark. The event will kick off with a brief orientation, and then we’ll break out into small groups and head out to local residents’ homes to provide a couple of hours of outdoor assistance. During the event, we’ll be helping with raking leaves, weeding, putting garden furniture into storage, etc. to help folks prepare for the winter weather.

We wanted to invite you to join us to make a difference in the lives of local individuals living with chronic illness and learn more about our organization. If you’re able to volunteer please register using this form. If you’d like to learn more, Sachi Brathwaite (sachi@lorishands.org), the Newark Chapter Manager, would be happy to answer any questions you have.

Thanks for your consideration,
Troy Spiezia, an intern of Lori’s Hands

Empowerment Center in need of “Go Bags”

posted in: Outreach, Service | 0

Dear Family of St. Thomas’s,

The Newark Empowerment Center is in need of “Go Bags”  (a meal in a bag) for our homeless friends. Everyday the Empowerment Center serves lunch – usually donated by a local restaurant or pizza place, to about 20 homeless friends. As the guests leave, they receive a “Go Bag” for dinner.  The Empowerment Center is running very low on their supply of “Go Bags”.

If you can possibly make up a few and bring them to St. Thomas’s over the weekend to the Health Fair on Saturday or worship services on Sunday,  they would be SO grateful!  I will put a box in the area outside the Office labeled “Go Bags”. I will deliver them to the Empowerment Center next week.

A “Go Bag” contains:

A shelf-stable entree (packet of tuna or beef stew or mac and cheese in a can or pack),

a cup of fruit,

a packet of crackers,

a packet of cookies,

a plastic fork/spoon wrapped in a napkin,

a drink (bottle of water, packet of fruit juice, etc)

ALL in a gallon ziplock bag.

Blessings to you ALL,

Madeline Johnson
