Dear Families of St. Thomas’s and St. Nicholas,

Last Thursday, June 11, 2020, with your help, we fed 40 homeless friends.  ALL of them were VERY grateful!  MANY thanks to all of our bakers, food and fund donators and pray-ers. Special thanks to Teresa Coons for cleaning up the kitchen after we left!

Here’s the plan for this Thursday: chicken noodle casserole, green beans and a muffin or roll, complemented by a fruit cup, cookies and a soda.  Below, you will find the sign up genius.   As always, only look at the black and gold part. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0A4DACA72AAAFF2-feeding10

If you would bring your items to St. Thomas’s on Thursday, June 18, 2020, between 2 and 4 p.m., that would be great.   If that doesn’t fit your schedule, please give me a call and I will pick it up at your door.

MANY Blessings for your care for our homeless friends,
Madeline Johnson

Dear family of St. Thomas’s and St. Nicholas,

Last Thursday, with your help, we fed 40 homeless friends. The end of this relief-effort is nebulous. Once the Hope Dining Room reopens, we can stop the dinners, BUT, the dining room is run mostly by retired people and they are the most at-risk population for COVID. Talks are underway, but no dates have come forth yet, so what I thought would be a temporary solution, is approaching 3 months.

I THANK ALL of you for your continued help with this aid to our needy friends. Here is the plan for this week:    Spaghetti and meatballs, tossed salad and garlic bread, complemented by a fruit cup, cookies and a soda.  Sign up at Sign Up Genius.  As always, only look at the black and gold part.

If you would bring your items to St. Thomas’s between 2 and 4 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2020 that would be great.    If you can’t do that, I would be happy to pick them up at your door – just give me a call.

MANY Blessings for your care of our homeless friends,

Dear family of St. Thomas’s and St. Nicholas,

Last Thursday, May 28, 2020, with your help, we fed 40 homeless friends in the parking lot of the Red Roof Inn. They were all VERY grateful to you. I am also grateful for your generosity and your help! MANY thanks to Jill Jensen for packing all the bags, to Teresa Coons and Susan Hechter for cleaning up after our “scoop and dash”, to our wonderful bakers and our food and fund donators AND those who pray for this ministry! I am also very grateful for my partner in “crime”, Kelly Tompkins, who comes to help scoop the hot food onto the plates, load the cars and dash off to serve it hot!   We are getting very practiced at this!

Here is the plan for June 4, 2020:  substantial nachos (with meat, cheese and salsa) and tossed salad, complimented with a fruit cup, cookies and a soda. Below, is the sign up genius.  As always, only look at the black and yellow part. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0A4DACA72AAAFF2-feeding8

If you would bring your items to St. Thomas on Thursday, June 4, 2020 between 2 and 4 p.m., that would be great! If you can’t do that, give me a call and I will pick it up at your door.

MANY Blessings for your care of our homeless friends,

Dear Families of St. Thomas and St. Nicholas,

Our homeless friends are still being sheltered at the Red Roof Inn! Last Thursday, April 30, 2020 we handed out 40 turkey dinners. See our food assembly and volunteers! MANY thanks to Miss Belinda and Jill Jensen for the turkeys and cranberry sauce, and to David Payne for carving up all the meat! Also, many thanks to our WONDERFUL bakers for the homemade cookies and to all those who provided fruit, soda and lunch bags, prayers and funds! Special thanks to Teresa Coons for doing the dishes after we scooped out the hot stuff and took off to feed our friends! She stayed behind and cleaned up our mess!

Here is the plan for this week: Tortellini and meatball casserole with garlic bread and green beans. Below, you will find the link to the sign up genius. As always, only look at the black and gold part, the rest is advertising. If you would bring your items to St. Thomas’s kitchen on Thursday, May 14, 2020 between 2 and 4 p.m., that would be great.

MANY Blessings for your care for our friends,
Madeline Johnson

Recap of this year’s 2019 Annual Bazaar

posted in: Outreach | 0

The Annual Bazaar was held on December 6th and 7th for the general public and after each of the services on Sunday, December 8, 2019.

On December 5th, the Great Hall was filled with parishioners setting up displays and bringing in craft items, specialties for the Bake Table and the food for lunches to be served on Friday and Saturday.

However, the real work was done in monthly planning meetings beginning in early May. In September at Rally Day, we showcased some of the items that would be for sale and had the congregation vote on the tiles of the Pilgrimage Windows that we would ask Christina School District Networks to produce for sale at the Bazaar.

A core group consisting of Katherine Doggett, Debbie Kearns, Joy Lynam, Connie Malin, Carol Palermo, Lisa Goodwin, and Barb Graham solicited everything from craft items, baked goods, and gently used items for the white elephant room to quarts of soup to sell (always a big favorite). As in the past, the parishioners went over the top in their response. In addition to items donated by our congregation we had returning and new vendors.

The event was advertised on Facebook, Instagram, and our web page. Over 650 people viewed the article on Facebook and we had more vendors apply than we could handle. We produced flyers announcing the Bazaar as in years past. In addition, thanks to Teresa Coons, we had very attractive post cards with the dates and times of the Bazaar and some of the offerings on the back. All were encouraged to take and distribute the flyers and post cards.

Parishioners also supported the Bazaar during the sale. This year, as in the past, all proceeds from the sale go to St. Thomas’s Outreach Ministries.

The Committee is a great group to work with. Our first organization meeting will be held in early May. You may want to consider joining this fun and valuable group.

Please share your time or gifts as you can.  Volunteers can come for 1 hour, or stay the whole 12 hours.  Gift cards, as well as warm clothing are needed to help make Christmas special.

They need your help to make this happen.  If you are able, please contact Tom Perkins with Code Purple by email at nec_codepurple@aol.com or by phone at 302.465.2070.

Fr. Howie hits the ground running for Preston’s March for Energy

posted in: Events, Outreach | 0

Fr. Howie is planning to squeeze a 5K race in between services on Sun., April 7, 2019 in an event to raise funds for a good cause, and to hopefully bring awareness that St. Thomas’s is on the map.  The race starts at 9:00 a.m. and the route goes down Orchard Ave which runs along the west side of the Grove.  If you want to join him, here is the link for the race sign-up as well as a link to donate directly to this cause. runsignup.com/Race/DE/Newark/CrushyourRun5K

If you are not up to running or walking the event, come join us along Orchard Ave at the west end of the Grove to cheer him on and to raise awareness to the community that we are here and are a lively church.  Wear your St. Thomas’s shirts / sweatshirts if you have them or make a sign if you feel like it.

See below for a map of the race route and where the cheering section should meet.

Race Description

Placers is proud to present the Orange Crush Your Run 5K! Come run through the streets of Newark with us.

Upon completion of your race, Orange Crushes will be waiting for our 21 plus runners back at the famous Deer Park Tavern!

This is a run/walk so come out regardless if this is your first 5K or if you’re a veteran!

Proceeds from this event will be going to Preston’s March for Energy.

Preston’s March for Energy was created with one goal in mind. With the overwhelming need for adaptive recreational equipment for children with disabilities and the concern for childhood obesity, Preston’s March For Energy’s mission is to provide adaptive bikes to children with special needs.

Our Goal is to have 20 bikes given away to 20 kids on a waiting list to receive a bike and have them join us in the race!

For more information about Preston’s March, see the website.

Join us! It warms our hearts every time a child is given a bike designed just for them! We want to share in spreading that joy with as many people as possible!

Post Race Party at Deer Park Tavern from 9:30 a.m. till 11:30 a.m.

Each participant will get two drink tickets for Orange Crushes.

*no shirts or chip time provided for 1 mile fun run/walk.

**Parking Notification: There is no parking in the Deer Park parking lot for the event.

We highly recommend using the paid parking garage across the street from the Deer Park or a paid City of Newark Municipal lot.
