Coalition to Dismantle the New Jim Crow

What we do

Awareness-Raising

Wehost monthly and annual forums, summits, and conferences to raise awareness andunderstanding of mass incarceration, systemic and institutional racism. Ourmonthly meetings inform the public of community and state programs and initiativesaimed at alleviating poverty and racial disparities, fostering equitableeconomic development, and creating safer and better connected communities.

Advocacy

Weadvocate for changes in state and local policy to rectify the effects of massincarceration, institutional racism, and economic inequality. This includessupporting fair policing practices, progressive economic policy, livable wages, and communities that value diversity, inclusion, and equity.

Racial Healing

Theeffects of institutional, structural, and interpersonal racism are perniciousand long lasting. People of color (this includes Black people, Latinos, Asians, and Native Americans) have long suffered the effects of  social andeconomic racial discrimination. The Coalition believes that it is necessary forpeople of all races to acknowledge the need for racial healing and collectivelywork towards a just society. We do this through educational activities andempathy building programs.

Rector Search Committee

Meets in the Parlor.

Our 2018 Rector search has begun. A search committee has been formed and we will work with our vestry, diocese and outside consultants to reach our goal in calling a new rector.

Our time together as a committee always begins with our St. Thomas's rector search prayer. We ask that you join us in prayer for this committee and our St. Thomas family:

Our Heavenly Creator, who has blessed this dedicated church family for 175 years serving our community in your faith and love. We ask for guidance for our Parish, Search Committee and Vestry as we embark on the journey to mutual ministry with our next Rector. Bless us with your grace and fill us with knowledge and fortitude throughout the process. In the Holy Name of Jesus Christ, our Savior, and of the Holy Spirit, AMEN.

Scottish Country Dancers

Meets in the Great Hall. Scottish Country Dancing is a wonderful pastime and is great exercise for mind and body. Although originating in Scotland, you will find clubs and classes in most countries around the globe. Scottish Country Dancing is very much a social activity and, unlike many other types of dancing, dancers are encouraged to dance with different people, so that couples who do come along, will dance mostly with other dancers and it is therefore most definitely not a requirement to come to a class with a partner. We are a friendly group of dancers and give a warm welcome to new members!

Musik Garten Class

Meets in the Undercroft.

The Musikgarten classes offered at Newark Music Makers are designed to nurture the child’s music aptitude by engaging children and their families in singing and movement activities which help attune the ear, refine the voice, and develop a rhythmic body through which music can be expressed. Additionally, instrumental activities are part of the program, ranging from playing simple rhythm instruments such as sticks and drums for babies and toddlers to playing keyboards for older children.

Musikgarten is the only program that offers curricula for newborns through group piano instruction. It is based on a keen understanding of how children learn, in both a general sense and, specifically, how they learn music.

As you familiarize yourself with our class offerings and learn more about Musikgarten,we look forward to answering your questions and welcoming your family into our music studio.

All the best,
Elizabeth Stevens, DMA
