Annual Bazaar planning is in progress

posted in: Outreach | 0

We will be holding our Annual Bazaar in 2 short months. Soon you will be seeing sign-up sheets to provide baked goods, your wonderful craft items and most importantly your TIME.

There will be sign-up sheets at the Time and Talent Day at our table on September 26, 2021. The sign-up sheets will also be posted on the bulletin board near the Choir Room. Please stop by our display and see some of the items that will be offered at the Annual Bazaar on November 12 and 13, 2021. Also, you will have an opportunity to vote to decide the Saint Tile hot plates that will be produced for sale this year at the Annual Bazaar.

In the meantime, if you have any clear wine bottles (we can take off paper labels), we need about 3 dozen of them. Considering the response in the past for wine corks, I don’t think this will be a problem for our congregation!

Also, any ideas that you have for items to sell at the Annual Bazaar are appreciated.

For questions or ideas, please contact Barb Graham at 44graham@comcast.net.

Children’s and Youth Ministry Fall Start-up

posted in: Children's Ministries | 0

THANK YOU to everyone who has been so generous in fulfilling our wish lists! The children’s ministry leadership team has been hard at work planning a safe, fun and meaningful program for the children this year. We will be including our youth in our planning for their activities.

Please consider joining our team as a children’s worship lead teacher or assistant or supporter or a youth group leader/guide. Let me know if you want to share a specific activity or ministry with our young parishioners.

And, please encourage your children and youth to join our advertised activities this fall. Lastly, if you would like to be a part of the activities but still cannot due to COVID safety concerns, let me know so I can try to include your child/family in an alternate way. See our COVID policy.

I look forward to seeing you all soon!

Children’s Worship begins Fall 2021 program

posted in: Children's Ministries | 0

Hello Friends,

I am excited to announce that Children’s Worship / Sunday School at St. Thomas’s will start next Sunday, September 12, 2021, as a “tent gathering” in the courtyard, under red tents. We are predicting that at the beginning of our return to “in-person” programming, we will have enough children and teachers for one multi-age class. (Think:  1 room school house).  Everyone will be asked to follow COVID safety guidelines while we are together.

In order for everyone to be safe, we need to have 2 adults in every class:  a lead teacher and an assistant.  We have a few lead teachers, but would LOVE to have some of you as an assistant.  We PROMISE we won’t ask you to prepare or lead a lesson – ONLY assist – pour juice/ serve crackers, clean up glue, etc.

We will be outside in the Grove as long as weather permits.  Next Sunday’s forecast is 81 degrees and sunny. You can sign up for a one-time trial, and this is NOT a lifetime assignment. We DO have the sweetest kids around.

If you would like to help as an assistant or have questions about our plan, please come talk to me at St. Thomas’s after either service tomorrow or contact me or Madeline Johnson. We would LOVE to hear from you.

Blessings, Belinda Young-Payne

Celebration of Time and Talent

posted in: Events | 0

St. Thomas’s worship and ministry are possible only with the generous gifts of time and talent offered by its members. Some of this service is public and visible, while much of it is done quietly and unobtrusively, especially in these pandemic times. All of it makes St. Thomas’s a vital, safe place where God’s people are cared for in many ways. Our offerings of time and talent are part of our stewardship of the resources that God has so generously given us.

This year, the event that was formerly Rally Sunday is going to be a celebration of the time and talent that go into making St. Thomas’s the wonderful place that it is. We are planning to celebrate all our wonderful volunteers (as well as recruit some new ones) between the services on Sunday, September 26, 2021. We are planning on making the event fun with door prizes and refreshments.

Come to St. Thomas’s on Sunday, September 26, 2021 to celebrate and give thanks for the gifts of time and talent that make St. Thomas’s possible! There will be opportunities for you to offer your own gifts. We will make tasks as doable as possible—no one will be asked to make a long-term commitment on the spot— and there will be opportunities for all ages and abilities.

We have been brainstorming tips to encourage people to become involved and would like your group to consider some of them.

  • Break tasks down into small, doable tasks, so that people do not become overwhelmed.
  • Give people a “free trial” of your activities.  Assure them that they can come once and are not making a lifelong commitment.
  • Assure people they can commit to as little or as much as they feel able.
  • Encourage youth to sign up, but do not have a Junior version of your group. If our youth sign up they are doing so as full members.
  • Think outside the box for times that new people can volunteer for your group, to encourage people with different schedules to sign up.

We are God’s hands and feet and voice. Everyone can be a part of the worship and ministry of St. Thomas’s. Everything that we do helps to create the kingdom of God here and now.

God’s gifts of grace come in many forms. Each of you has received a gift in order to serve others. You should use it faithfully. 1 Peter 4:10

Opportunity to help Afghan Refugees

posted in: Outreach | 0

Dear Family of St. Thomas’s,

You have, no doubt, heard about the Afghan refugees that are coming into the Philadelphia airport. They are, eventually, going out to cities all over the country. Some are coming to Delaware!

We have the opportunity to team up with Jewish Family Services (JFS), which is one of the agencies helping to settle these families. They have jobs we would be good at: Helping to furnish their living quarters – don’t we all have an extra spatula or can opener in our kitchen drawers?  An extra chair, mattress or bed? Helping to take them to appointments or to the grocery store. Or, helping them connect to the community.

Jewish Family Services (JFS) will give us a quickie class in cultural sensitivity. We will have a translator available if nobody in the family speaks English. You can tell  JFS exactly what your availability is. Every person who volunteers is a blessing.

These people have come to our country for refuge, with NOTHING. It’s hard to imagine. If you are interested in helping, please send me an email at mad1240@comcast.net and I will let you know when our “Cultural Sensitivity” class will be and how we can obtain our clearances to work with these new friends.

Many Blessings to you all,  Madeline Johnson

The Largest Pipe Organ In The World and a talent to match

posted in: News | 0

The Boardwalk Hall Auditorium Organ is the pipe organ in the Main Auditorium of the Boardwalk Hall (formerly known as the Atlantic City Convention Hall) in Atlantic City, New Jersey, built by the Midmer-Losh Organ Company. It is the largest organ in the world!

The main auditorium is 487×288×137 feet with a floor area of 140,000 square feet, giving a volume of 5,500,000 cubic feet. Consequently, the organ runs on much higher wind pressures than most organs in order to achieve a volume loud enough to fill the hall.

Guinness Book of World Records recognized the Midmer-Losh with multiple entries:

  • Largest pipe organ in the world based on the number of pipes – more than 33,110 in 449 ranks
  • Loudest musical instrument/loudest organ stop – with sound described as “a pure trumpet note of ear-splitting volume”
  • The only organ to have stops that run on record air pressure (100”) – about 30 times more than a normal organ stop
  • One of only two organs in the world with a true non-digital, accoustic 64-foot stop, the Grand Ophicleide stop is unique in the organ world because it’s a reed-flue hybrid
  • Largest musical instrument ever constructed – with eight organ chambers and nine 32-foot stops (stops are the components that control the amount of pressurized air going into the pipe chamber)
  • The biggest console with seven manuals [keyboards] and 1,200+ stop-keys complete with orchestral instruments, from flute to violin.

Marc Cheban at the Boardwalk Hall Auditorium OrganWith an instrument that large, it takes someone with huge talent and confidence to make her sing. And, who better than our own Marc Cheban!

“During the 2017 Christmas Season one of the gentlemen that works on the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall organ was at one of my sing-alongs at Longwood Gardens. After the program he approached and asked if I could maybe play on the Atlantic City organ the following Christmas. I was enthusiastic in my response. Sure enough, I played a number of times during the 2018 season on that organ. I guess they liked my style and the type of music I played and they asked me if I would be willing to play one day each week during the summer season. So I chose Tuesdays; that Summer I played every Tuesday from Memorial Day through the end of September. I played there again during the 2018-19 Christmas season but that was the last time that any of the organists played until this month, due to Covid.”

“The gentlemen that work on the organ are so lovingly devoted to ‘her’ that I was hooked the very first time I played there. However, because that organ and its console (where the organist sits) were built before there were specific console dimensions, it is physically challenging for me to play, since most days I am tall and that console was not designed to accommodate a tall organist. But I still love every minute of it.”
