Looking for online worship service greeters

posted in: News | 0

We are looking for people to act as Online Greeters for both of our virtual services. The Greeter would welcome people as they join the service and comment at several points in during the service. We can provide a script to be used in the chat box. The Greeter would also be the liaison between those participating in the virtual service and those in the building and be provided a contact number to report any technical issues in real time. Ideally, we would have enough people for both services that Greeters would only have to be online once a month or so, enabling them to participate in person at other times if they wished. If you are interested in becoming an Online Greeter, please contact Philippa Sunnergren at phil@sunnergren.com

T-shirts in support of aid to Ukraine

posted in: Outreach | 0

On March 3, 2022, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, stated that over 1.2 million Ukrainians have become refugees, approximately 50% of them children, in neighboring countries, plus thousands displaced in-country.

It is critical that we unite around the globe for peace. Our support and voices are critical in helping to end this calamity. Our prayers and support matter.

This Sunday, following each service, a representative from PLAST will be in the great hall, selling t-shirts for $20 each, in support of aid to Ukraine.

PLAST is the Ukrainian branch of Boy Scouts, for boys and girls of Ukraine, ages 6-23. Faithfulness to God is paramount, because Plast has an idealistic worldview that commands belief in a higher meaning of life, in the Creator of the whole world. Just like Scouts in the US, Plast doesn’t teach religion, but requires from its members practical religiosity based on Christian principles. Plast doesn’t discriminate among faiths and respects each religious faith, but requires living in accordance with Christ’s teachings and the requirements of the faith to which the Scout belongs.

Hope Dining Room volunteers for March 21, 2022

posted in: Service | 0

Dear Families of St. Thomas’s and St. Nicholas,

Monday, March 21, 2022, is our opportunity to serve at Hope Dining Room.  We have been having about 60 guests each day, so the need for a meal is increasing in Newark. If you would like to contribute to the effort, you will find a Sign Up Genius for the items we need to complete the meal.

You may bring your items to St. Thomas’s,  Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. – noon or when you come to church on Sunday. If you can’t get there, send me an email and I will pick the item up at your house.

Beginning in JUNE, we will be serving IN Hope Dining Room – no more “grab and go”.  We will need more volunteers in the kitchen to help serve and the duty times will change: 10:30 – noon for the cooks and 11:45 – 1:30 for the servers.

As always, thank you for your support of those who need us most.

MANY BLESSINGS,
Madeline Johnson     mad1240@comcast.net

Hello faith family! Sunday is the First Sunday in Lent – March 6, 2022, Year A. Services are held in-person with precautions and online via our YouTube channel. See the Worship Schedule below. This is the first week of the additional 5 p.m. Sunday service, which this week will be a service of penance and reconciliation. This service is in-person only. Please do not hesitate to contact the office or Fr. Howie with any questions or concerns about these options. We are listening to the experts and considering how to best keep our faith family safe during this pandemic.

See the St. Thomas’s Carpenter’s Helper newsletter for news and events information for this week. You will find a prayer for peace, an invitation to a new ministry, and some thought-provoking poetry musings from our sexon, Kenneth. Kenneth’s choice of poem for the Helper is so appropriate for this week, as we will be enjoying the Gospel reading in both Spanish and English, and this poet is published in both languages.  He also grabbed a book of post-Soviet Ukrainian poetry from the library, “From Three Worlds: New Writing from Ukraine“.  It is not only a collection of some of Ukraine’s most talented writers, but is also a medium for Ukrainian literature to rewrite the Soviet palimpsest that has systematically repressed and excluded Ukrainian voices.
